Waiting on God’s Timing

It has been said that in an average lifetime we spend 6 months of our lives waiting at red lights, 2-3 years waiting in lines (10-12 years waiting in line at Disney! Haha!), and 43 days waiting for customer service! Don’t ya just love waiting? (Haha! Yeah, right!) The season of Advent (waiting with anticipation for Jesus to come) brings that word “Wait” to light. In old times, people waited with anticipation for the first coming of Jesus. In our day, we wait and anticipate the second coming of Jesus.

But there’s a third kind of “Advent” waiting, the waiting that is most difficult for us in our life journeys. It’s the “waiting on Jesus to show up in our daily lives” – showing up in different ways, individual ways, unique ways, personal ways. You know, those times when we pray and seek Him for answers, direction, guidance, provision, wisdom, clarity, healing, whatever it is we need in our lives, right?
I don’t know about you, but for me, the longer I have had to wait on God to act on something I have prayed about, the more stressed I can tend to get. I am learning, like you, to trust and rest Him more. The tension, I think, centers around God’s timing. The human side of me wants results NOW! But in many cases God simply chooses to wait. As my pastor would say, “We live in a microwave world and we have a crock-pot God”

I will share be sharing more things we can learn by waiting on God, but for now let’s focus on this one.Trust God’s Time Table.

One thing I am learning is that if I want to have a proper perspective on waiting, I must choose as an act of my will to live according to God’s time table, not mine. Charles Stanley said, “If I entrust myself to His care, that includes His timing”. God is the giver of time and His timing is perfect. Think of it. It has to be, because He is! Just because I can’t see it happening on my time table doesn’t mean He is not working on my behalf. My human nature is to think so small and I limit myself to what I can see and feel at the present moment. But God thinks so much bigger, so much broader, and has a much larger perspective than I do. He sees the big picture when I don’t. Isaiah 55:9 says “For as the Heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways.

Because God is all-knowing, He knows us better than we know ourselves and knows what is best for us, which means we really can trust Him for His perfect timing. Because God is sovereign and perfect in all His ways, that means He’s never too early, and He’s never too late. He’s always right on time. Hmmm…..He’s got this time thing down to a science, doesn’t He?There are many reasons why He chooses the timing He does in our lives, and we will glance at those in weeks to come. But for today, nail this down in your heart from this day forward. Faith in God also includes faith in His timing. Nothing takes Him by surprise. He sees us, has our best interest in mind, and He’s got our backs! Rest in that fact today, and thank Him for it, even when you don’t “see” it happening
