One Bite at a Time

It’s good to set goals in life.  Many people set goals at the beginning of the year and are determined to achieve what they set out to do, but find themselves falling short.  they think to themselves, “Well, that goal was just unrealistic”, or “I got distracted”.  What separates those who are successful in achieving their goals from those who don’t?  Certainly attitude, faith and determination play a role,  but one common theme of achievers is that they understand the art of taking things one step at a time.  You know the saying, “How do you eat an elephant?  One bite at a time.”  I think one of the big keys to having success reaching your goals is as simple as 1,2,3.  1: State a clear goal.  2: Break it into small pieces that you can handle.  3: Work on one step at a time, complete that step, and move forward.  Some steps can be achieved fast, other steps take a little longer.  Some steps have to be repeated over a period of time in order to set in.  That’s OK.  God is with you every step of the way.  Just move forward.

God gave Abraham and Moses huge tasks.  How did they accomplish those tasks?  One step at a time.  Their journeys took a while, didn’t they?  What about Noah?  Do you think he build the ark overnight?  Fat chance.  He built it one piece at a time.  What about Nehemiah building the walls?  One brick at a time.  But God was with them all every step of the way, and He’ll be with you, too.

Has God given you a goal for this year?  Maybe a task that seems way bigger than you?  That’s OK.  He knows what He is doing.  Say yes.  Then ask Him how you can break it down into manageable portions.  Maybe He wants you to begin a personal devotional time with Him each day, and you think you don’t have time.  Try waking up 5 minutes earlier.  10 minutes earlier, work your way to 15.  Or take 5 minutes from your lunch break or at an appropriate time of the day.  Just take a step at a time and keep moving forward.  Consistency becomes habit.  Habit becomes lifestyle.  I know – I’ve been there.  Quiet times are a natural part of my life and have been for as long as I can remember.  But like anybody else, I had to start somewhere.

Maybe you are trying to lose weight.  Set your goal.  Then break it into manageable parts.  Set mini-goals.  “I will lose 1 pound per week for the next 3 months”.  Then ask yourself, “How am I going to do that?  I’ll limit my calories to so many per day.”  Log how many calories you take in each day.  Keep a journal.  Walk 10 minutes, then 15.  Do “X” number of jumping jacks.  You get the point.  Manageable steps, journal your progress, and be accountable to someone.  You can do this!  (See Philippians 4:13)

I set a goal last year of writing my story “Caged In”.  It was a huge undertaking!  The end never seemed to be in sight.  But God prompted me to take it one step at a time.  I was accountable to my editor.  She told me, “Charlie, give me something every Sunday.  Even if it’s just a page, give me something.  Just write.  If all you can do is 10 minutes one day, that’s better than no minutes.  Just keep writing.”  She was right.  One step at a time, over a period of time, and I was able to fulfill my goal!  Oh, the feeling of conquering the giant!

Remember things don’t happen overnight.  Most good and worthwhile things in life take time.  Be patient with yourself.  Pray for daily strength, courage and wisdom, then you and God go for those goals!  If you stumble, reach out for His hand.  He’ll pick you up and help you get back on the road.  Whatever your goals, whatever your dreams, just keep eating that elephant….one bite at a time!

For I can do everything through Christ Who gives me strength. – Philippians 4:13
