Life in the Rear View Mirror

With the approaching New Year upon us, it’s a good idea to pause for a moment and reflect on the past year in order to appreciate the good things and learn from the not-so good things.  But we must remember there is a difference between reflecting, which allows us to grow, learn, and put things in perspective; and dwelling on negative events, past mistakes, disappointments, failures and hardships.  When we park there it has the power to hinder us from moving forward and making positive changes in our lives.  Don’t poison your future by dwelling on the past.  Let go and move on!  There’s a great saying that puts it this way, “Don’t look back….You’re not going that way!”

Do you have things to be thankful for over the past year?  Good!  Then thank God for them and move forward with a grateful spirit.  Let your thankful heart ignite your soul and give you a positive perspective as you move forward with confidence that God will continue to provide your needs.

Do you have dreams or goals that you want to pursue this year?  Make a list of things you will need to do in order to reach your goals, then begin moving forward, one step at a time.  Even small steps get you closer to your goal.  It took me nearly the entire 2014 year to write my story “Caged In”.  It seemed like an enormous task – too big to handle – so I kept putting it off year after year.  But I prayed through it and decided to move forward with it, no matter what.  It was extremely important to me to leave my legacy in writing, so I went for it.  Oh man, I thought I would never get it done!  But I just started writing.  10 minutes a day.  20 minutes a day….eating the elephant one bite at a time.  Sometimes I would get on a roll.  Other times it just wasn’t happening.  But I stayed determined.  I kept moving forward, sometimes just tiny steps at a time.  Finally, in November, I was able to have a final product published and available on my web site and on Amazon!  I climbed the mountain, with God’s help – one step at a time – and realized my dream.  And boy am so glad I did,  because now I can see how many people are being positively affected by my story!   What a relief and what a feeling of accomplishment!  You can do the same with your dreams or goals.  Depend on God and move forward.  Whatever you do, don’t let anything in your past paralyze you and hold you in place.  You gotta shake it off, let it go and move forward.

Do you have regrets, sadness, hurt, disappointments over the past year?  Decide you are not going to allow those things to hold you back any longer, either.  It’s time to let go of them, learn from them, put them behind you and to begin to move forward with your life. If you are not moving forward then you are in the same place.  Growth happens and strength comes when we decide that in God’s power we will move forward.  You can’t live life to the fullest looking in the rear view mirror.  Look ahead.  Shake off the shackles.  Pursue God’s best for your life.  Take His hand and move forward.  One step at a time – one day at a time.  Trust me, you will look back one day and see how far you have come!  But it all begins with the decision to no longer look back, but instead to take that first step forward.  Want to have a blessed and productive new year?  Move forward!  Don’t look back…’re not going that way!

…..Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us.
