Local Church Youth Ministry: 1976-1997
I started my ministry career in local church youth ministry and served for 21 years in Oklahoma and Texas. I was employed as a church staff youth pastor in various Southern Baptist churches located in Lawton, OK; Wichita Falls, TX; Muskogee, OK and Ardmore, OK over that 21 year span.
Para-Church Ministry: 1997-2012
I left the local church ministry in 1997 to begin my own 501-C 3 Non Profit Ministry called Upward Bound Ministries. What started out to be a ministry for teenage young men, (YMI – Young Men of Integrity) quickly morphed into a 15 year career doing concerts and leading worship for children & families.
I met a missionary while leading a kids camp who eventually took my wife and me to Uganda, East Africa to minister to orphan children under the care of Watoto Childcare Ministries. I was their camp worship leader, and they gave me what became my stage name for 15 years, “Uncle Charlie”. (In Uganda, “Uncle and Auntie” are terms of respect that all English speaking children use for any adult – much like how we use the terms “ma’am and sir” in our country). It was at that camp in Uganda where my calling to lead kids worship became very clear, thus “Uncle Charlie” was born.
Local Church Children’s Worship Leader: 2011
In 2011, two years after my complete recovery from a near fatal car accident I had while on tour (see my accident story), I temporarily went back to the local church and served as Kids Worship Leader at The Crossing Church in Brandon, Florida. This was in order to restore my body after trying to make a comeback from my accident too early. Although the mind was willing, the body was weak, and I was unable to handle the physical stress that extensive traveling and touring puts on the body. After a year of restoration and wonderful kids worship ministry as a local church kids worship leader, I went back on the road full time. This time my ministry was mostly directed to serving children who were underdogs.
Music Missionary to Overlooked Kids: 2011-2012
When I went back on the road I focused more and more on leading camps, retreats and events for underprivileged kids, disadvantaged kids, refugees, those with physical and mental disabilities, orphans, and overlooked children. I worked closely with groups such as The Salvation Army, Special Touch Ministries, Hope 4 Refugees, and other ministries nation-wide.
In November of 2012, I performed my last concert before retiring “Uncle Charlie”. I intentionally went back to the same place and same group of people I was headed toward when I had my near fatal accident five years before to the date! I couldn’t think of a better way to close out my 15 year career than by giving God the glory for what He had done through His miracle of sparing my life through the accident! By faith I knew it was time for me to retire, but I still had no idea what my next step of ministry would be.
Faith Based Life Coaching: Current
After a season of seeking God’s direction and rediscovering my own identity after letting go of “Uncle Charlie”, I knew in my heart what God had in store for this season of my life – faith based life coaching. So I immediately went through training, got my certification through Identity and Destiny, and began life coaching in February of 2013. My identity is that I am a resilient, faith filled encourager and my purpose is to help people succeed in their spiritual journey so they can make their lives count for Jesus! Youth Ministry and my Uncle Charlie ministry were platforms to do that on. Now Life Coach Charlie is my new platform to fulfill my purpose.
My Unique Qualifications
Above and beyond my personal training and certification, my many ministry experiences over the past 36 years have given me vast, hands-on experience in working with all types of people. I am blessed to have mentored, counseled, discipled, encouraged, inspired and poured in to countless people of all walks and all ages. All those years of ministering to people with various needs have prepared me to be a natural life coach today. That, along with my dominant spiritual gift of encouragement (exhortation) and a God-given set of natural people skills makes me a unique and effective Life Coach.
My own personal life journey of faith and resilience has also enabled me to coach from a godly perspective. God has led me take many great steps of faith in my journey when I couldn’t see what was around the corner ahead. He has also helped me overcome various life obstacles from childhood to adulthood, including seeing me through a nearly two year recovery process from a major traumatic car accident. He has given me incredible strength, faith and resolve over the years to face life transitions. All of this brings unique perspective when coaching individuals.
For these reasons I believe that God has placed me here “for such a time as this” to help others in their life journey to find meaning, direction, clarity and resolve. Contact me today and let’s soar!
